I basically had a new office since Hurricane Harvey.\u00a0 I mean, it was painted and I had pictures on the wall.\u00a0 Still, it seemed kind of drab, boring and crowded.\u00a0 I quit my job as a mortgage underwriter and I was ready for something new.\u00a0 Just repaint a wall to make it bright and inspirational was really all I wanted.<\/p>\n

My thought was to repaint one wall as a feature wall.\u00a0 You know, to make a small statement.\u00a0 I decided to stencil my wall.\u00a0 How easy and quick is that?\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 Wrong! I ended up making over my entire office.<\/p>\n

This all started out simple enough.\u00a0 I was going to order a stencil and paint it on one wall.\u00a0 That\u2019s it!<\/p>\n

I ordered my stencil, \u201cAllover Rose\u201d from Cutting Edge Stencils<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From feature wall to full makeover<\/h2>\n

I picked out my two paint colors.\u00a0 One color was the base coat and one color was the stencil color.\u00a0\u00a0 That was my plan but that is not what happened.<\/p>\n

My ceiling was regular flat white paint and I decided I needed to change that.\u00a0 My beige base color soon became my ceiling color.\u00a0 Here comes the plastic and the painter\u2019s tape and the drop clothes and well you know\u2026all the prep stuff.<\/p>\n

Next, I painted three of my walls purple.\u00a0 Yes, I said purple and I love it.\u00a0 There are no rules and I do what makes me happy.\u00a0 Purple makes me happy.\u00a0 So three wall painted purple\u2026done!<\/p>\n

My paint colors came from Lowe\u2019s and are Sherwin Williams paint colors.\u00a0 The beige color is called, \u201cOyster Bar\u201d SW7565.\u00a0 The purple paint is \u201cViolet Twilight\u201d HGSW2412.\u00a0 An eggshell finish is what I chose because I wanted my paint to dry quickly.<\/p>\n

Now to stencil my feature wall.<\/h2>\n

I started with my stencil in the upper left corner of the wall. I used painters\u2019 tape to adhere the stencil to the wall.\u00a0 I used a small 4-inch roller that I removed excess paint by rolling on a metal grate. Now, it is written that you should use a paper towel to remove the excess paint.\u00a0 I did not do that because I did not want any lint from the paper towel to get on my roller.<\/p>\n

The stencil must overlap the previously painted stencil work.\u00a0 Your paint must be dry in order to do this.\u00a0 You cannot put a stencil on wet paint.\u00a0 This is why I used an eggshell finish because the drying time is much quicker and I didn\u2019t want to wait.<\/p>\n

What I learned<\/h2>\n

I learned quite a bit with my first-time stencil job.<\/p>\n

  • Clean your stencil often.\u00a0 I noticed that I had to add more and more pressure to get the paint in the tiny design.\u00a0 Had I cleaned my stencil more often I would not have had this extra work and my paint would have been more consistent.\u00a0 When I did finally clean my stencil about half way through and continue, the paint was much darker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • \u00a0Buy the biggest stencil offered. I chose the smallest stencil because I was cheap.\u00a0 Had I paid just a few dollars more, I would have finished faster and had fewer mistakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Get an eggshell finish unless you have a lot of time to spare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Watch out for the borders. You get a top stencil to finish between the ceiling and where the actual stencil begins.\u00a0 This is great but the side borders were an issue.\u00a0 The right side was no problem as I just continued to bend the stencil around the corner.\u00a0 I should have started the left side the same way.\u00a0 Going back to fill in on the left side of the wall was difficult and messy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          My office turned out to be beautiful.\u00a0 I love it and it was well worth the effort.\u00a0 Everyone thinks it is awesome.<\/p>\n

          Yes, there are plenty of mistakes and it is not perfect at all.\u00a0 The photos really show that.\u00a0 In person, it is not so evident.\u00a0 We added crown molding and baseboards.\u00a0 I will take what I learned here and use that knowledge to do better next time.\u00a0 Perhaps my back porch!<\/p>\n
